Using Microsoft Store to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro – it upgrades to Enterprise instead.

Over the last two days I encountered a problem with using the Microsoft Store to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.  Although I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, the Microsoft Store installed Windows 10 Enterprise, which was unlicensed.  After researching this, it seems to be a common problem.

A client had purchased a Lenovo Ideapad 3 that had good specs, but came with Windows 10 Home.  Once we got the laptop signed in with a user, I opened the Start Menu and went to Settings – Updates & Security – Activation and clicked on Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for $99, which took me to the Microsoft Store.  I purchased the $99 upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, and it began the upgrade.  The upgrade failed because I had not activated Windows 10 Home before starting the upgrade, so I restarted the computer which activated Windows 10 Home.  I ran the upgrade again from the Activation screen.  However, after restarting the computer, I found that an unlicensed copy of Windows 10 Enterprise had been installed.  After a lot of research I found two things:

Change (downgrade) Windows 10 Enterprise to Pro

  1. This is a common enough problem with the Microsoft Store that Microsoft created an article about it.

  1. The solution to this problem is to use a generic Windows 10 Pro install key to downgrade from Windows 10 Enterprise to Windows 10 Pro without having to do a reinstallation of Windows 10.
